Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The new Conference Center in Salt Lake City where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs in the summer.
The Mormon Tabernacle in Temple Square, the permanent home of the Choir. Here our guide demonstrates the fine acoustics of the building. She tore a piece of newspaper, dropped 2 pins and a nail from the gallery. We heard it loud and clear.

The famous organ has 11,623 pipes.
It is an oval building with the dome borne on 44 sandstone piers. It was built this way to allow people in the back of the hall to hear the speaker or singers from the pulpit without microphones---170 feet away. The building seats 6500 people.
We were lucky to have been there on a Thursday, when the Choir rehearses in preparation for their Sunday radio and television broadcast. That's Dr. Mack Wilberg, the Music Director, leading the rehearsal. The gates open at 8 PM and the rehearsal ends at 930 PM. There are concerts on Sundays at 930 AM. Recitals are Monday to Saturday at noon, and Sundays at 2 PM.
The Choir has 360 volunteer members, ages 25 -60 who went through intensive auditions.
