Broadway on Broadway 2009

The traditional kick-off to the Fall Broadway season.

I apologize for my Jumbotron photos. This is the stage.
Fela!

Host Michael McKean
The cast of In the Heights. That's Andrea Burns.
Shrek the Musical's Donkey, Daniel Breaker. Ben Crawford is the new Shrek. I didn't get a good shot of Sutton Foster. They sang "Who I'd Be".
The crowds seemed thinner this year.
A moving song from the new musical Memphis. I might just go see this one.
Beth Leavel singing "The Winner Takes it All" from Mamma Mia!
John Stamos introducing his Bye Bye Birdie fellow cast members.
Jennifer Damiano from Next to Normal singing "Superboy and the Invisible Girl".
a pixilated Alice Ripley
Aaron Tveit's back!
Cheyenne Jackson's back on Broadway in Finian's Rainbow.
Funnyman Seth Rudetsky who led a "Seasons of Love" singalong. Nice to see the spirit of Rent still alive and well.
The "Seasons of Love" soloist who learned one night that Pavarotti was in the audience, and failed to hit her high note. She promised Seth she'll hit it today, and boy did she ever!

I forgot her last name, but her first name's Shayne.
I'm so excited for Ragtime! Previews begin 23 October and opening night is 15 November.
"Wheels of a Dream" made me teary-eyed.

The rest of the cast came out to sing "Ragtime" afterwards.
West Side Story. Matt Cavenaugh and Josefine Scaglione singing "Tonight".

Ms. Scaglione appeared to wipe away a tear after their performance.
The cast of Billy Elliot performing "Shine", led by Haydn Gwynne.
The ballet girls. Tommy Batchelor was Billy.
New cast member Kerry Butler and the company of Rock of Ages.
They sang "Don't Stop Believin'". This was the last performance of the day.
"New York, New York" sing-along as confetti rained down!
Other performances: Wicked, Jersey Boys (except it was the girls who performed), South Pacific, Hair, The Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, Burn the Floor, Chicago and Irving Berlin's White Christmas.

Out of the Blue

By some form of Broadway karma I found myself in NYC this weekend! Nope it wasn't planned but a last minute airfare magic! Yes, the universe aligned and made it possible for me to be in the city to visit family and friends and at the same time see some shows and attend Broadway on Broadway 2008.

Broadway on Broadway is a free concert in the middle of Times Square sponsored by the Broadway community for it's fans and NYC residents. Each Broadway show participated and performed a song. This year the event was on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008. I was actually not planning to go to the event but was heading to the theatre district to get tickets for Title of Show which I wanted to see that night. Out of the Blue, Lisa, my niece and I came out of the subway on 43rd street right smack behind the Broadway on Broadway stage! By some luck, we somehow managed to get through and ended up behind the press area! It was my first time to attend and it was so much fun even with the sweltering heat. Yes, the theatre gods were blessing us that day!

So here are my pics (mostly paparazzi-ish shots though) from Broadway on Broadway 2008:
