Sutton Sings Live
From Seth Rudetsky's Playbill column regarding Sutton Foster (Seth is guest starring on Bunheads. He is in the season ender.)
"Turns out, as opposed to most TV shows and films, she always sings completely live on "Bunheads." So great! She gets the accompaniment pre-recorded and then wears a little, tiny earpiece that plays as she films. The drummer and I pre-recorded her audition and she was filmed singing it around five times. Of course, only Sutton can hear the accompaniment while it's filmed so when you watch her perform on set it's actually just her standing in silence and belting up a storm. She did an incredibly physical version of "Maybe This Time" on a previous episode that anyone on TV would have wanted to pre-record but she sings it all live (AKA she's from Broadway, people!)

Seth Deconstructs in Chicago
Broadway funnyman Seth Rudetsky was in town this past weekend for his Deconstruction show and an auditioning masterclass. I managed to catch the Deconstruction show with two of my friends Friday night (11/4) at Mayne Stage in Rogers Park.
Seth talked about his obsession with belting and belters with his fave, Patti Lupone and Betty Buckley. He also gave lessons on what to listen for to become proficient in "deconstruction".
The funniest bits were him comparing Ms. Lupone's Evita with Madonna's (gasp!) and the bit where he deconstructed Cher doing West Side Story.......as Maria, Tony, Anita as well as the Sharks and the Jets! By the end of the show, we were wiping tears of laughter off our faces! I've seen his Deconstruction show before at New World Stages in NYC but it's still pretty hilarious on second viewing (albeit not all the bits were the same). It was simply Ah-mazing!
I'd have to say that it was my first time at Mayne Stage and it is such a perfect venue! Not to small yet not too big but still very intimate. Plus they've got great sight lines from your seats and serve really good cheeseburgers! How can you go wrong?!!

Live on Broadway
If you're in New York City on a Wednesday, stop by the Times Square Visitor Center to watch a taping of Seth Rudetsky's Sirius XM Live on Broadway radio program. It starts at 12 noon and runs for an hour.
Look out for the very entertaining security guard Wilbur Tune, yes like Tommy Tune. And Wilbur from Charlotte's Web. A true theatre geek himself, he was keeping order throughout the proceedings.

I had the good fortune to see the team from Catch Me if You Can this past Wednesday. Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, and Aaron Tveit gave a sneak preview of the cast album, available digitally on the 23rd of May. The CD will be in stores on 28 June.
Aaron had to leave to catch his 2 PM matinee.
This was the Showtune Showdown. That's Broadway Bob on the right. Of course, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman won. They were playing for an elderly lady who was in the audience.

EGads!
Guess what? The Book of Mormon's Josh Gad got nominated for this year's Fred and Adele Astaire Awards! Rory O'Malley and Josh sat down with Seth Rudetsky to talk about the surprise nomination. The awards will be handed out on May 15. And attention Daniel Radcliffe fans: he got nominated! Here's the list of those who made the cut.

Brotherhood of Man
My sister and I watched How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying last night. It's a fun, hilarious show. Daniel Radcliffe did a fantastic job singing and dancing. It is still in previews, and it was a full house. Very enthusiastic responses, standing ovations at the end. And yes, we did see a brief glimpse of Dan Rad at the crazy stage door. All That Sass
Sirius satellite radio host Seth Rudetsky interviews Julia Murney (The Wild Party, Wicked)in today's broadcast. She talks about how they first met and why Seth calls her "ass", her audition for Wicked and some mishaps as well as her voice over career. And for those wondering about that Spice Channel voiceover, that would be here.
Below is Julia singing All That Jazz from Chicago. Incidentally, as she begins singing, Seth's piano suddenly rolls away......her reaction was pretty funny. Check it out!

They're Playing Our Song
The Actors Fund benefit concert of They're Playing Our Song was presented last Monday with Sutton Foster and Seth Rudetsky as Sonya and Vernon. I wish I had seen this but alas couldn't. Here's some scenes from the benefit courtesy of Broadway.com. Sutton's voice truly fits so well with the songs.
