Hardly Despicable

Despicable Me had me at "It's so fluffy!" then add those unintelligible yellow Minions. Voila! We get a charming, fun, sentimental, family-friendly adventure film.

Steve Carell is Gru, a super-villain with Mommy issues (Julie Andrews voiced his mother). With a strange Eastern European accent and a physical resemblance to Danny DeVito's Penguin, he hatches a plan to steal the moon to show up rival baddie Vector (Jason Segel).

Behind every hero/antihero is a technological wizard, in this case, hard-of-hearing Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand). And of course, no self-respecting scoundrel would find himself without the aforementioned Minions to do his bidding. (I would love to watch the DVD just to see the individual expressions and actions of each one.)

Instrumental to his plot are 3 little girls from the orphanage run by Miss Hattie (Kristen Wiig). Margo (Miranda Cosgrove) is the oldest and most pragmatic. Edith (Dana Gaier) is the mischief-maker, while Elsie Fisher voiced the impossibly cute Agnes who just wants a stuffed unicorn toy. Mr. Carell deftly walks the fine line between malevolence and benevolence as he tries to uphold his status as number one evildoer while balancing his duties as a new father. Mr. Perkins (Will Arnett) is the President of the Bank of Evil (according to the movie, the bank formerly known as Lehman Bros.) who has lost faith in Gru's ability to be a menace to society.

The film provides laughs, action, and just the right amount of tender moments as our bad guy learns that world domination is nothing compared to parenthood. Agnes said it best: "It's so fluffy, I think I'm gonna die!" If you can't get enough of those Minions, stay for the credits.

She Wins An Annie!

Jen Cody (Shrek, Pajama Game, Urinetown) wins an Annie Award. What's that you may say, it's an award given by the International Animated Film Society. It's animation's highest honor! It was given to her on Feb. 6 for her fabulous voice work as Charlotte LaBouff in The Princess and the Frog. Congratulations to her! To read more about it click here.

The Bolt Show

On Valentine's Day, I had a date with a heroic dog, a manic hamster and a worldly-wise cat. I really just wanted to see it because of the wisecracking hamster, but ended up loving the film.

Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) is the canine star of a popular TV show with a familiar plot: girl human owner(Miley Cyrus) Penny gets in trouble, courtesy of a British-accented villain(Malcolm McDowell) and gets rescued by genetically modified superdog. Except aforementioned dog doesn't know it's all make-believe. He gets accidentally shipped to the Big Apple, and no thanks to funny and sly New York pigeons, gets entangled with streetsmart kitty Mittens ( Susie Essman). They embark on a cross-country journey to be reunited with Penny, helped along the way by Bolt fanatic Rhino (Mark Walton), a hamster who almost never leaves his plastic ball.

Just like Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear, Bolt has an identity crisis. The scenes where he's learning how to be a dog from his feline companion, and where he finally enjoys being one, are priceless. The pigeons (from different regions of the country) are hilarious. The hamster (as I expected), almost steals the show. I love this exchange:
Rhino: Bolt! I can be a valuable addition to your team...
Bolt: I'm listening...
Rhino: I'm lightning quick, I have razor-sharp reflexes. Wha! And I'm a master of stealth.
[laughs]
Rhino: Plus, I'll keep the cat in check.
[Mittens rolls her eyes]
Bolt: [Gets down close to Rhino's ball] The road'll be rough.
Rhino: [indicates] I have a ball.
Bolt: There's no turnin' back.
Rhino: Guess I'll have to "roll" with the punches!
["surfs" his ball]
Bolt: Easy won't be part of the equation...
Rhino: Promise!
Bolt: I gotta warn ya, going into the belly of the beast - danger at every turn.
Rhino: [getting closer] I eat danger for breakfast!
Bolt: You hungry?
Rhino: [cracks neck] Starving!

This Oscar-nominated film is clever, sentimental and good-humored. And there's nothing wrong with that. Rhino was right: Bolt is beyond awesome...it's be-awesome!
