The 6th New York Asian Film Festival kicks off this Friday, June 22 at the IFC Center. It transfers over to the Japan Society from July 5 to July 8.
By the way, at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, Lee Wang won the Student Distinction Award for Someone Else's War. It is a heartbreaking look at low wage workers from the Philippines risking life and limb in Iraq to provide better lives for their families. There was a Q and A with the filmmakers after the screening. The questions posed by the predominantly American audience revealed this huge, yawning cultural divide. Hopefully the movie encouraged further debate and discussion about poverty, the war on terror and global politics. Lee is working on an expanded version of the film for PBS.
